about

If there is a core, an artistic and emotional center to the music released by Free Floating, then Daniel Robert Lahey’s music is there. I consider his music (breathing may surprise, tonalchemy and now gravity’s kiss) to be the prototypical examples of what I think Free Floating music is.

Daniel’s music creates this aural space that is lush and deep, yet very simple and immediate at the same time. There is real depth to his knowledge of traditional musical structures, yet he is wise enough to let the pieces find their own way without too much of a heavy hand. He profoundly trusts the music and it shows in the pieces he creates.

This collection came together when Daniel sent 4 DVDs full of music files to me, allowing me to listen and choose which tracks I wanted. Daniel has said of the tracks that I picked, “It seems like many of my works toward which you gravitate are ones that have much more of the music happening in spite of me as much as because of me.” It would seem, then, that I am in tune with that part of him that trusts the music and allows its gentle yet insistent pull to gently lead him a better and more beautiful place.

It’s the kiss of gravity.
